TrailerTime: Beauty And The Beast

You might have heard the tale before. Apparently it’s as old as time. But no matter, because Beauty And The Beast is shaping up to be one of the movie events of 2017. The first 90-second teaser trailer has dropped today, & while it reveals little, the film promises much. What is there to get excited about? Well…

  1. The cast: Emma Watson has the ideal charm for a modern Belle. Dan Stevens will combine Downton magic with the threat of The Guest for a fearsome Beast. Plus Luke Evans, Emma Thompson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Stanley Tucci, Ian McKellan, Josh Gad, Kevin Kline & Ewan McGregor’s candlestick. Sorry, I mean Candlestick.
  2. The look: A towering, darkened castle with huge creaking doors. A vast ballroom bedecked with stunning chandeliers. A mysterious, faded portrait slashed apart. And right at the end of the trailer, a single, perfect rose. This is the fairytale you’ve been searching for.
  3. The story: Watson’s best post-Potter role was in Stephen Chbosky’s touching high-school drama The Perks of Being A Wallflower. Chbosky is a co-writer here, & if he can apply the same delicate touch to BATB, the magic will melt hearts.
  4. The nostalgia: The 1991 animated classic was when the Disney Renaissance really kicked into gear. Millions can recall songs, scenes & minute details; it is childhood distilled. Everything suggests director Bill Condon (Dreamgirls/Twilight: Breaking Dawn) & the writers have stuck to a similar formula – better get practising your best Gaston muscle flex.

So check out the teaser, & mark March 17th 2017 in your diaries, when the castle doors will creak open once more, inviting you to be…our…guest…
