My party trick used to be telling people I had read the BFG. I mean I was an insufferable four-year-old (some might say I still am), but that didn’t stop me. That part of me is therefore delighted to see a first trailer for The BFG, the Spielberg-directed live-action version of Roald Dahl’s classic novel. Screenwriter Melissa Mathison tragically passed away last month, and her many warm obituaries identified E.T. as her most famous creation. If she can bring half of that impish spirit and belief in magic to this, it will be quite the experience. Any sequence like the Whizpopper song from the 1989 animated version is fine by me too.
Starring Ruby Barnhill as the orphaned Sophie, Penelope Wilton as The Queen and Mark Rylance in the title role, The BFG is set for a July release in 2016, if you can hold in your whizpoppers that long.
