TrailerTime: Sunset Song

Few cinematic experiences are as comforting as a British period piece; the warm familiarity of costumes, setting and language are known to audiences across the world. Terence Davies’ first film since 2011’s The Deep Blue Sea plays on the popularity of this genre to tell a coarser tale than some might expect, that of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s classic novel Sunset Song. In her first major starring role Agyness Deyn is compelling as Chris Guthrie, the young woman who struggles for independence against a tyrannical father and a society that at best ignores women and at worst brutalises them. She is supported by excellent performances from Peter Mullan, Jack Greenlees and Sunshine On Leith‘s Kevin Guthrie, and as you will see in the trailer below, the picture shimmers with the stunning beauty of the Scottish moors. The BFI-backed film wowed audiences at last month’s London Film Festival, where Vivien Heilbron (Chris Guthrie in the 1970s TV production) annouced her presence to the surprise of all including Davies. Previews of Sunset Song are taking place in Scotland right now, before a UK release on December 4th – this one is perfect for escaping a cold winter’s night in a warm cinema…
